WALES

The flag of Wales consists of a red dragon passant on a green and white field. The flag incorporates the red dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd, along with the Tudor colours of green and white. It was officially recognised as the Welsh national flag in 1959.

A Royal Badge for Wales was approved in May 2008.  The motto which appears on the scroll, PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD ("I am true to my country"), is taken from the National Anthem of Wales and is also found on the Welsh designs for £1 coins minted from 1985 onwards. The Welsh logo has never been used much in the past as a symbol in Wales, although today it is increasingly present in the version without the crown.

GEOGRAPHY OF WALES

Wales is a generally mountainous country on the western side of central southern Great Britain. Wales is a small country. It is bordered by England to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, and the Bristol Channel to the south. Much of Wales' diverse landscape is mountainous, particularly in the north and central regions, and Snowdon is the highest peak.

The River Severn, the long est river in Great Britain, sarts in mid Wales and the flows throught central England to the Bristol Channel. The country lies within the north temperate zone and has a changeable, maritime climate.

The south coast is the main inhabited and industrialised area with cities like Swansea and Cardiff.

ECONOMY OF WALES

During the Industrial Revolution, development of the mining and metallurgical industries transformed the country from an agricultural society into an industrial nation; and the South Wales Coalfield's exploitation caused a rapid expansion of Wales' population. Two-thirds of the population live in south Wales, mainly in and around Cardiff (the capital), Swansea and Newport.

Now that the country's traditional extractive and heavy industries have gone or are in decline, Wales' economy depends on the public sector, light and service industries and tourism.

CARDIFF

Cardiff is the capital and largest city in Wales and the eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom. The city is the country's chief commercial centre, the base for most national cultural and sporting institutions and the seat of the National Assembly for Wales. Cardiff is a significant tourist centre and the most popular destination for tourists in Wales. Cardiff was ranked sixth in the world in National Geographic's alternative tourist destinations. The Cardiff metropolitan area makes up over a third of the total population of Wales. Cardiff was made a city in 1905, and proclaimed the capital of Wales in 1955. Since the 1980s, Cardiff has seen significant development
